One of Katie Maloney’s post-divorce hookups was recently exposed in Vanderpump Rules season 11, and someone else besides Tom Schwartz was hurt by it. In the last two episodes of Vanderpump Rules, a topic of discussion was Katie’s night spent with former co-star Max Boyens. Unfortunately for the parties involved, the secret wasn’t kept for long, as Scheana Shay admitted to learning about it immediately by peeking at Max’s location. Scheana’s husband, Brock Davis, then quickly informed Katie’s ex-husband, as Schwartz and Max are “best friends.”
Max was last a member of the cast in Vanderump Rules season 8, where much of his screen time was taken up by his fling with Dayna Kathan. Max and Dayna were only on the show that season, with Dayna making a brief appearance for the current season. Schwartz and Sandoval called Katie hypocritical for sleeping with Max because Katie got so upset with Schwartz for kissing Raquel Leviss, as seen in Vanderpump Rules season 10. Some feel what Katie did to Dayna was worse by sleeping with Max, as they are now good friends and co-host a podcast together.

Dayna & Max Have A Long History
On a recent episode of Katie and Dayna’s podcast, Disrespectfully, the two former SUR employees immediately addressed the “tattooed elephant in the room” following the news. Their discussion provided insight into Dayna and Max’s previous relationship and how Katie’s role doesn’t make her the greatest friend. After Katie explained what happened, Dayna said she isn’t bothered by it for reasons many people are assuming, adding that it’s “not even a girl code thing.” What bothered her was the fact that Katie chose to sleep with someone who had treated her “very poorly for years.”
She said many viewers were reaching out with the assumption that because he was her ex, there were emotional feelings behind it. Regardless, Dayna was clear about where she stood: “I am not going to let Max interfere in one more relationship of my life.” This stance makes sense; Dayna wanted listeners to know that Katie’s actions weren’t poor because she dated him, but because she didn’t see a problem in being intimate with someone who has proven to be a bad person.
Katie Didn’t Tell Dayna About Max After It Happened
Another stinger added to the situation was Katie didn’t tell Dayna what she did after it happened, but that wasn’t her decision. Katie said she didn’t want the hookup to be on the show and wanted to have a private conversation with Dayna after. However, she noted that producers told her to keep it a secret until the cameras rolled. Dayna, understandably, didn’t appreciate this. She sternly explained that she didn’t want to be associated with Max in any way.
“My main thing about it is I do not want my name mentioned in the same sentence as his name for the rest of my life,” she said about their conversation being filmed for Vanderpump Rules season 11. Whether Katie had much of a choice in the matter is unknown, but considering she and Dayna are close friends and now business partners, it is likely true that she wished she could’ve told Dayna on her own. It also seemed genuine when Katie said she intended to keep the hookup from being a storyline.
Katie’s Defense Isn’t Great
Katie isn’t proud of her decision, not because she owes anything to Schwartz, but because it’s clear Dayna is hurt by it. Katie said she wasn’t trying to use it as an “excuse” but that she “wasn’t thinking about anything, unfortunately,” that night. She seemed to want to rebel after learning about Schwartz’s make-out moment with Scheana, which she learned about shortly beforehand. Katie took accountability and admitted being “selfish” for hooking up with her friend’s ex, but Dayna probably won’t ever fully get over this.
Scheana Shay Also Has A History With Max
Katie and Dayna weren’t the only SUR servers who had a history with Max. Scheana had a fling with Max during Vanderpump Rules season 8 when she was single. Scheana was known then for being clingy and “boy crazy,” but they never seemed to have a serious relationship. Max and Scheana’s on-screen, short-lived romance gave viewers an honest first look into what Max was about. It was clear he wasn’t interested in a serious relationship and didn’t care if he hurt others’ feelings.
Where Is Max Boyens Now?
So, where is Max now? He hasn’t commented publicly on his recent affair with Katie or anyone else, and he doesn’t post much on social media either. What is known is that he’s still good friends with Schwartz, and he must be friends with Scheana, considering she has his location. In terms of his career, according to Max‘s Instagram account, he’s the CFO of a liquor company and is still a proud bartender.

During their conversation on Disrespectfully, Dayna showed Katie a lot of grace considering the circumstances. She let her co-host and listeners know that she wasn’t judging Katie and that she prioritizes their friendship over the latest Vanderpump Rules drama. However, a few things she said seemed more emotionally charged than she was trying to display. For example, at one point, she said, “I could not have a lower opinion of Max Boyens if I tried.” And that was one of many aggressive comments about Max. It almost seemed like she was more hurt than she would admit to Katie.
Katie and Dayna are still good friends and just launched a podcast together. Their friendship wasn’t ruined due to Katie’s mistake, and that’s all that matters in the long run. Vanderpump Rules needed some extra drama this season, and Katie (and randomly Max from season 8) provided it.
