Jenn Tran Discusses Being the First Asian American Bachelorette and Her Family’s Cultural Background

Getting candid.

Bachelor Nation fans saw Jenn Tran get announced as the next Bachelorette during the season finale of “The Bachelor.”

After the exciting night, Jenn stopped by for an exclusive chat with Joe Amabile and Serena Pitt on the “Bachelor Happy Hour” podcast.

The co-hosts asked Jenn if she has any plan going into the experience and she said, “I really just think I’m going to be myself and see what happens. The beauty is that I know I’m going to make mistakes and mess up. I know I’ll do something crazy, but I feel like that’s the beauty and realness of it all. No one is going to be perfect or have a perfect love story.”

She went on, saying, “Honestly, I’m excited to mess up and see how it all unfolds. You want a partner that’s going to be there for you during the messy moments too, you don’t want someone who is only there for the good moments. Nobody only has good moments. The person who will be there through all the good and bad moments is going to be the person for me.

Jenn said she wants someone who is kind, cheeky, dedicated, committed, and open minded.

She added, “I am Asian, I’m fully 100% Asian and I think that is something that we will talk about, so I need someone who is open minded about that and the conversations that will surround all of that.”

Joe asked Jenn what it means to her to be the first Asian American lead of the franchise.

Jenn said, “It’s really insane to think about and I’m honestly so honored and grateful for this opportunity to be the first Asian lead of the franchise. It is historic and it feels monumental. I grew up not seeing a lot of Asian representation on TV and I felt constricted in what I could do because of that. I called my 12 year old cousin when I found out and she sobbed when I told her that I was going to be the first Asian Bachelorette. She said she was really happy and it was the moment when I realized that this is a lot bigger than just me.”

Jenn continued, saying, “This is going to be huge for a lot of different people like my cousin and other little girls out there who are going to be looking up to me and seeing themselves in me so they think they can do it too and that they can find their love story and be the main character. I think that’s really special and important to talk about and think about. I just hope I do it right, it’s a lot bigger than just me. The thing I’m thinking about most is that I just want to break the mold of what people think the perfect Bachelorette will be or the perfect person will be. I think I can break that mold in a lot of different ways. I can relate to a lot of people out there who don’t fit a specific mold, but can see themselves in me.”

Serena asked Jenn to share a little more about her family and what people can expect when they meet them.

Jenn said, “I am 100% Vietnamese, both of my parents immigrated here from Vietnam in the 1980s and they had me after that. As for traditions and culture, we do come from a Buddhist family, so we have a different New Year than January 1st, we have it in February and we do a big prayer setting for it. There are also so many different foods that we have and other cultural elements that I am so excited to talk more about.”

She also shared, “I am excited to showcase that when they are able to meet my family. I think that is going to be so telling about how my family dynamic is and how different it is from what you usually see on screen. I think that’s something that a lot of people can relate to and are going to be happy to see.”

We can’t wait!
